Can You Mix Antibiotics and Alcohol?  (Copyright: Thinkstock) A question to dissect.   Studies show booze won’t stop most treatments from working properly or cause unpleasant side-effects. However, the story isn’t quite that simple. Women who are in the early stages of pregnancy, and who are not ready to share the happy news, know that turning down an alcoholic drink at a social occasion can be a dead giveaway. Telling friends and colleagues they are on antibiotics is the perfect excuse because they are so commonly used. Even the nosiest of acquaintances is unlikely to ask what they are being taken for. But is it really true that you need to abstain from alcohol when on a course of antibiotics? Some people assume that alcohol will stop antibiotics from working properly, while others believe that it will cause side-effects. How to learn like a memory champion For most of his 20s, Ed Cooke had been hovering around the top 10 of the World Memory Championships. His  achievements included memorising 2,265 binary digits in 30 minutes and the order of 16 packs of playing cards in just an hour. But at the age of 26, he was getting restless, and wanted to help others to learn like him. "The memory techniques take a certain discipline," he says. "I wanted a tool that would just allow you to relax into learning." The resulting brainchild was Memrise. Launched in 2010, the website and app is now helping more than 1.4 million users to learn foreign languages, history and science with the ease of Cooke's memory powers. It has been followed by similar apps that also take the pain out of learning – both for individuals, and in schools, with some teachers finding benefits that even Cooke couldn't have predicted. “It's very powerful – it does all the spade work of learning,” s...

Wole Soyinka Live on Amanpour #BringBack OurGirls Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka had a frank interview with Amanpour on CNN on Tuesday evening and the man was in his elements. He had a lot to say about the mess going on in Nigeria. Below are his words: “This is a government which is not only in denial mentally, but in denial about certain obvious steps to take... It’s one of those rather child-like situations that if you shut your eyes, if you don’t exhibit the tactile evidence of the missing humanity here, that somehow the problem will go away.”  When asked about the dramatic display of Patience Jonathan, Soyinka said: "Please, I do not want to say anything about that woman who calls herself the First Lady of Nigeria. No, I wont." Amanpour asked him if he believes that President Jonathan is in denial, Soyinka said, “It’s not only he. It’s the advisers around him. It’s a certain section of the nation, some of whom enjoy for various reasons a nation i...
